The Technology Modernization Fund is seeking proposals for investments in artificial intelligence (AI) projects in federal agencies. Under the Biden administration’s executive order on implementing AI, the fund is offering funding for projects that aim to improve agency operations, enhance coordination between existing programs, and modernize legacy systems. Proposals requesting $6 million or less and with a project timeline of no more than 1.5 years will receive expedited review. The fund aims to accelerate the use of AI in government and has already identified over 228 AI applications and more than 1,000 potential projects. However, the Government Accountability Office has cautioned that responsible management of AI is necessary to minimize risk and avoid unintended consequences. A bill has also been introduced to increase transparency in the use of AI and automated intelligence systems in government agencies.
