NIPSCO has announced a multi-year project to install new electric meter technology. The Merrillville-based utility is preparing to install meters for 3,000 electric residential customers in Highland beginning in March 2024. The company plans to install the Advanced Metering Infrastructure technology in phases to the remaining 490,000 electric residential and business customers throughout NIPSCO’s service area over the next three years. This new system will provide improved responses for outages and emergencies, as well as the ability to read customer meters remotely. Customers will receive a notification letter about 30 days in advance of the installation.

NIPSCO’s Senior Vice President of Electric Operations, Ron Talbot, stated that the Advanced Metering Infrastructure technology is designed to improve safety, reliability, and enable system modernization. The integration of the new meters will allow NIPSCO to provide improved responses for outages and emergencies, promote energy efficiency offerings, cost savings, and more detailed billing information for customers. With the ability to read customer meters remotely, the company can take faster corrective action in emergency situations, enhancing safety for customers and employees. NIPSCO aims to align with its mission of delivering safe, reliable energy that adds value to customers by implementing new technologies like the AMI system.
